Meter Exchange Useful Information
Meter Exchange Useful Information
For Smart meter upgrade, Meter Repair or replacement
GloBird does not charge for the meter or its installation. However, there are certain circumstances
that could lead to a potential cost like wasted site fee. To avoid unnecessary costs and delays, you
could:
Provide Clear and Safe Access
Before the scheduled date, ensure safe and unhindered access to the meter and main switchboard.
This includes ensuring gates are unlocked, unobstructed access to the meter location and main
switchboard, dogs are kept away, and making sure that the area surrounding the meter does not
cause hazards to the metering company’s technicians.
Please let us know in advance if you need to update your access details.
Undertake Remedial Work for Technical Issues
In some cases, the premises’ electrical installation may have issues, defects, or faulty wiring. In such
cases, the meter job cannot proceed before the issues are fixed.
Unfortunately, these issues are unable to be determined until the metering company attends your
site and checks the meter or meter board. So, you may need to engage a qualified person at your
own cost to have these issues fixed first.
- Network Isolation for Multiple Premises:
If your property shares a single supply connection with other units, which is common in apartment
buildings or unit blocks, meter isolation may be necessary to avoid the outage of other units. This
process involves disconnecting the meter from the shared connection to ensure accurate metering
for each premises.
In New South Wales, you need to engage a Level 2 electrician to install a network isolation unit
called a Meter Protection Device (MPD). The MPD should be labeled with unit number, making it
easy to identify. In South Australia and Queensland, the meter installation process requires
coordination with your local distributor, and this will incur additional charges.
- Insufficient Room on the Meter Board:
Sometimes, the meter board may not have enough space to accommodate the new meter or may be
cluttered with other equipment. In such cases, the meter board may need to be reorganised or
expanded to accommodate the meter and a charge reflecting the unanticipated work will apply.
- Asbestos Around Switchboard:
If there is asbestos present around the switchboard, additional precautions and safety measures
must be taken. You will need to have an electrician to remove the asbestos before the metering
company attend your site to conduct the meter exchange. Otherwise, a wasted site visit fee will
apply.
- Non-standard Meter
If your site requires a non-standard meter, an extra charge will apply.
As a valued renter, you play an essential role in facilitating the meter exchange. Providing clear and safe access to the meter and main switchboard will help the technician carry out their work efficiently and without delays.
If you have concerns about the premise’s circumstances or potential cost, please feel free to reach out to your landlord or rental agent. They are well-placed to assess the situation and address any concerns you may have.
Your electricity plan with GloBird Energy will not normally change after the meter exchange. However, if your local electricity distributor mandates a change to the nature or structure of your meter tariff after the job is completed, we may change your plan accordingly. If we do so, we will notify you prior to effecting the change.
