What is carbon offsetting?
The electricity that you use from the grid comes from various sources. Electricity generated using renewable and sustainable methods comes through the same wires as that produced by traditional generation sources that emit carbon.
Because all energy flows into that common pool (the national grid), it’s impossible to know exactly where each electron you use has come from.
Any business that wants to contribute to greater sustainability and lower emissions can calculate the greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activity – mainly anything that burns fuel or uses electricity – and purchase an equivalent number of credits from a project that removes, reduces, or prevents greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere.
That project might contribute to planting trees or preventing deforestation (as trees absorb carbon and store it in their biomass and surrounding soil) or to the funding of renewable energy projects.
The concept means that the emissions released are cancelled out by an equivalent amount of emission-reduction activity.
So, while we do whatever we can to reduce our carbon emissions, because we can’t completely eliminate them, we offset what we emit with carbon offset units.
When the number of carbon offset units purchased by an organisation is equivalent to the volume of their greenhouse gas emissions, that’s considered carbon offset.
Why we have introduced GloGreen now
When GloBird Energy started, back in 2015, we were extremely focused on delivering the best value energy possible. We wanted to make the energy market a fairer place for you (and perhaps push a few of our competitors to lift their game, in the process).
We’re proud that we’ve achieved this goal, adding a new level of competition to the Australian retail energy landscape.
All along, we’ve also genuinely encouraged customer feedback. We consider it the best way to ensure we continue to deliver on our commitment and improve our offering.
Over the past year or so, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of customers (and prospective customers) wanting the option of greener, more sustainable energy plans.
We have been working on the idea for a while, but of course had to ensure that what we came up with was as good as we could make it.
